This library was created through close collaboration with Alicia’s Keys herself and thus incorporated the high standards of a global superstar. The library itself is very technical, with 17 GB of high-quality samples (compressed effectively to fit into the Kontakt player) and 12 discrete velocity layers per note. This means that when you are playing a sensitive, whisper low ballad, or when you are playing a loud, charging chorus, the instrument will still give the amazing dynamic response. The ability to use the sustain pedal with sampled sustain and release conditions is one of its best qualities that give it the realistic bloom and the resonance of a real grand piano.

FROM ALICIA’S STUDIO TO YOURS

This instrument was the result of a creative work by Alicia’s Keys and a team of industry legends. The collaboration with Danish sample guru Thomas Skarbye (founder of Scarbee) and impulse response mastermind Ernest Cholakis saw Keys attempt to develop a virtual piano that reflected the soulful sound that she has made her name with. It is this very piano sound that has been used to grace several Grammy-winning songs and hit the top of the charts across the world.

In contrast to most libraries that are recorded in sterile studios, ALICIA’s KEYS was recorded during her own playing, in her own personal studio, The Oven, with her long time trusted engineer, Ann Mincieli, closely watching over. This intimate feel makes the virtual version have the artistic soul and the feel of the original recording sessions.

ALICIA’S VERY OWN KEYS

Alicia’s Keys has her own Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano that is the center of this library. The instrument is a rare piano built in 2002 to mark 100th anniversary of Yamaha and it is positioned at the top of the Conservatory Collection line. Thomas Skarbye, Nils Liberg, the genius of Kontakt script, and Ann Mincieli were able to capture the distinct and exquisite sound of the C3 Neo by using old microphones and high-quality preamps.

Through examination of the particular playing style Alicia used, the team was able to obtain the best nuances such as optional mechanical sounds such as finger-to-key contact and use of pedals, and this unique instrument has become a common feature of all producers.
